Settlement currency is a commercial term, not an afterthought

Hong Kong’s open financial system makes multi-currency settlement straightforward. That flexibility is only useful if it is negotiated deliberately.

Hong Kong imposes no exchange controls and its banks handle major currencies including offshore renminbi as a matter of routine. For a trade running between a supplier billing in one currency and a buyer budgeting in another, that flexibility can be the difference between a workable deal and a stalled one.

The value only materialises if the currency, the conversion point and who bears the movement are agreed up front. Left vague, a favourable price erodes between contract and payment and someone absorbs a loss they never priced. We treat settlement currency as a term to be negotiated alongside price and Incoterm, not as an operational detail to be settled later.
